Spatial Relationship

Space within a space:

Space within a space is when a small space is contained within the large space and takes up its volume. The size of the spaces can make a difference in the visual field. If the small space is relatively small, we perceive it as it is being contained by the big space. However, when the small space increases its size and the differences in the size of the two spaces become merely different, the large space become like an outline of the small space.

Interlocking Space:

Interlocking space is when a part of a space overlap the volume of another. When the spaces overlap, we can interpret the spaces in many ways.

- The interlocking volume can be shared by each space equally.

- The interlocking volume can merge or subtract the volume of one of the spaces.

- The interlocking volume can develop its own identity and become another space.

Adjacent Space:

Adjacent space is the most common type of spatial relationship. It is when two spaces are adjoined or share a border. Unlike other spatial relationships, adjacent space allows each space to clearly define its own identity.

Spatial Organization

Grid Organization:

Spaces organized is when the space is organized within the field of a structural grid. The grid is formed by sets of vertical and horizontal lines that establish the regular patterns of points at each intersection. The grid organization help keeps the organization consistent throughout the space.

Radial Organization:

Radial organization is the combination of centralized and linear organization. It refers to when the linear organizations are extending out from the central point in radial manner. It consists of the center point and the linear arms that are extending out from it. When the linear arms are similar in form and length, it will maintain the overall organization form. However, they might varies according to different context and function.
